Art Exhibit and Holiday Sale

I just finished hanging twenty-two pieces, mostly watercolors, plus a few ink drawings, at the East Fishkill Community Library. I’ll have quite a few more paintings, some framed and some just matted, there just for the opening reception tomorrow evening, but the pieces that are hanging will be there until the 26th.

A number of my paintings are wildlife, some of them endangered species, and I will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of any of those to an appropriate wildlife conservation organization– the Wolf Conservation Center and the Wildlife Conservation Society are two I have in mind. I’m open to suggestions of other worthy organizations.

Darkness and Dawn

Darkness and Dawn
I woke up and glanced out the bedroom window to see streaks of light breaking the darkness, crossing the night sky with hints of the new day. Racing to my studio, I painted this in the dark; if I had turned on a light, I would no longer have been able to see what was dim but dramatic in the early dawn light beyond my window. As I look at the sky on such mornings, I can’t help wondering how often our lights, sounds, and other ways of adapting our world obscure from our view the often-silent beauty of that which is beyond our control and is far more majestic than anything we can create. 
This is one of the paintings on display at the East Fishkill Library until Friday this week.

Pileated Woodpeckers

Pileated Pair

One day, feeling down, I walked outside hoping
the fresh air would lift my spirits. One of these magnificent birds swooped low
beside me and landed on a tree just feet from me—the first Pileated Woodpecker
I had seen on our land! We now have a pair in our woods, and every time I see
them, I am reminded of that gift.

Solo Exhibit at East Fishkill Library

My paintings are on display this month at the East Fishkill Library, and we had an opening reception last Friday. It was a wonderful and fun evening with many visitors– my parents were there, as were many friends, including a few whom I hadn’t seen in many years, so it was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect. Over the next few weeks, I’ll post some of the watercolors that are on display at the library, along with the little write-ups I’ve done to go with each painting.

Holiday Small Works Exhibition at Barrett Art Center

Looking for small, affordable works of art for holiday gift giving? Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY is having a Holiday Small Works Exhibition from Saturday, December 1st through Saturday, January 19th.

I have four watercolors and one charcoal piece in the exhibition. My sister, Jennifer Thompson, and I painted together when she was visiting after Thanksgiving, and her two watercolors will be in the show. We always enjoy painting or sketching together when we’re together, and we encourage each other and share our work often. You can also see my friend Deb Townsend’s encaustics and another friend, Patty Ten’s, pastels in the show. I’m excited about exhibiting with friends and my sister and am looking forward to seeing the variety of artworks by many local and regional artists. Come on out and join us on Saturday afternoon!

“Connecting with Nature” Exhibition in Wayland, MA

My second solo art exhibition opens this Saturday at the Wayland Public Library near Boston. I’m busily getting ready now, matting and framing paintings, printing out labels, planning for the opening reception, and getting ready to travel to Wayland.

I’ve just cut the mat for a triptych of Alaska paintings– that was a time-consuming operation!

 I’ll have several other landscapes from our trip to Alaska, as well as some landscapes from various spots I’ve painted around this beautiful country.
